Rover Retro 2013, Friday 10th – Sunday 12th May 2013:
The 2013 Retro will be based at Presteigne on the Shropshire/Powys border. After some research trying out the restaurant (we both ordered different choices from the menu to try out as many different things as possible and our meals were very good indeed, life’s hard sometimes!) and inspecting the bedrooms which are all different, we’ve booked a change of venue - The Radnorshire Arms Hotel (popular with the VSCC who hold regular events nearby). Dogs are welcome but only in the garden rooms (recently refurbished to a high standard and with direct access to the garden).
Room rates for the weekend are – a Double or Twin room with bed, full English breakfast and 3 course evening meal is £60 per person per day based on double occupancy for a 2 night stay. There are no single rooms as such but a double room will be charged at a single occupancy rate for with bed, full English breakfast and 3 course evening meal at £65 per night. Rooms have the usual coffee/tea making facilities and TV for those who can find time to watch. If anyone prefers to bring their caravan, let us know and we’ll find you a local camp site.
We’ve been offered a selection of 3 course menus for dinner so we have a different menu for each night and been allocated sole use of the restaurant for our evening meals and Sunday lunch (also 3 courses – the diet can start the following week). Please settle bar bills direct or else the RSR will go broke or put your subs up again! We’ll be meeting up on the Friday night for dinner at the hotel when the clock winds back and apart from welcomes, the weekend’s itinerary and road book etc. will be handed out.
On Saturday morning we’ll be taking a scenic drive into Hay-on-Wye on the Herefordshire/Wales border – famed for its hundreds of book shops for a leisurely morning pottering around the town which also has many antique shops, pubs and cafes. From there, we’ll then be leaving with our picnic lunches for the Treasure Hunt which take us through some stunning countryside. At dinner on Saturday evening, we’ll have the usual fun and be presenting a few prizes.
On Sunday morning we’ll be visiting the Judge’s Lodgings in Presteigne. We’ll be going a bit further back than Rover car drivers – into the 1870’s, lit by oil and gas lamps and the world of Victorian Judges, their servants and felonious guests. We’ll then be retiring back to the Radnorshire Arms Hotel for a 3 course lunch.
Apart from accommodation, evening dinner and your bar bills which you will need to settle direct, the cost for the weekend will be £40 per person which includes: entrance to the Judge’s Lodgings, lunch on both Saturday and Sunday, car plaque, and the cost of the trophies/prizes. I’ve based this on the RSR breaking even on the weekend, not making a profit.
